The transition from primary to secondary school is a significant mile stone in both a young person’s and parents’ life! It is a time that can be filled with both excitement and apprehension, due to the many changes such as the environment (which can seem huge in comparison to primary), routine and increased movement around school, new teachers, school uniform and the additional resources that are needed on a daily basis.
Here are some top tips from our occupational therapy team to help support the transition:
Familiarise yourself with school environment and school route Universal transition day has now taken place; however, support will still be available whilst settling in. In the lead up to September, identify the routes that you will take to get to and from school, and practice these (this will also help with knowing how long it will take).
Promote organisation and time management skills Organisational and time management skills become increasingly important in secondary school, there is more to remember (e.g. homework / resources) and increased movement around school. The following strategies can help:
• Using Planners: Use a school diary, planner or digital calendars to keep track of homework, projects, and extracurricular activities.
• Creating Checklists: Create daily and weekly checklists for tasks (including when homework is due), which can make responsibilities seem more manageable.
• Establishing Routines: Develop morning and evening routines that include time for school preparation, such as packing bags and laying out clothes.
• Support for homework: Have a daily set time for homework. Where possible ensure homework can be completed in a distraction free area at home. Colour code key subjects to help with planning, and use homework planners to identify when homework has been issued and when it is needed in. Set reminders on a phone if this is a preferred method, including the evening before it is due (so you remember to pack it). Access to a homework club can be a useful resource to ensure homework is completed at the end of the school day.
Promote Physical Well-Being A healthy body supports a healthy mind (including emotional resilience). Encourage engagement in physical activity, a healthy diet and prioritise sleep!
Support emotional resilience Transitioning to secondary school can be emotionally challenging. Foster resilience by creating a safe space for children to express their feelings and concerns, teach mindfulness techniques (such as deep breathing) to help manage anxiety, and set realistic goals (no matter how small).
To summarise the transition from primary to secondary school is a pivotal period that can shape a child’s educational journey and personal development. By implementing the above simple strategies, a young person can navigate this change with confidence. With the right preparation and support, children can thrive in their new school environment and beyond.
